Emma Brownlow King (1832-1905)


Emma Brownlow King naît en 1832 à Londres. Elle est l'une des trois filles de John Brownlow secrétaire au " Foundling Hospital ", institution fondée en 1739 par le philanthrope Capitaine Thomas Coram et qui a pour but de recueillir les enfants abandonnés en vue d'assurer leur éducation et leur entretien. A l'âge de 20 ans, elle expose à la " Royal Academy ". En 1863 elle voyage en France où elle se dit très impressionnée par les grands maîtres du Louvre. En 1867 elle épouse le chanteur Donald King. Ses sujets de prédilection sont les peintures de genre où elle excelle, mais proche du " Foundling Hospital " et attentive comme son père à en donner une image positive, elle trouve souvent là matière à peindre dans la représentation d'enfants. Elle meurt en 1905.
